SEASON 2, EPISODE 14 SHOW NOTES

Ranjith is passionate about communication and transformation. He trains teams to be better communicators and agile practitioners. His hobbies include speech making, portrait photography and latin american dancing.

Ranjit is also a friend and former Sapient colleague. One of the fun things about these conversations is that I get to delve into a persons background. I’ve known Ranjit for years, but never knew about how he ended up in Germany from his native India.

What I especially liked about this conversation is how deeply we got into the weeds of running a consulting/service business in Germany.

This episode will be especially interesting if you’re thinking about taking the leap from corporate employee to freelancing and/or founding your own company.

There is a lot of valuable (I hope!) shop talk in this episode.

In our conversation we discussed:

  • What it’s was like starting a career in Germany with little to no German language skills
  • The factors that prompted him to go out on his own, and how his good relationship with his employer allowed him to take two existing clients with him
  • Presenting yourself as a company vs. a soloist and why he went from freelancer to founder
  • How to go about getting a supplier number to make it easier to contract with into large companies Germany
  • How working at larger organizations gives you access to untapped budgets and projects allowing you to plan annually vs. quarterly
  • The clever model he now uses after his onshoring business got offshored(!)
  • How he leveraged relationships with colleagues and agencies to build his business
  • How Building up a financial base gave him the freedom to experiment with his business
