munich personal branding photographer - Ling Kohr

Tell us a little about you. How did you end up becoming a photographer in Munich? How long have you been in business? Describe your style of photography.

Hello, I’m Ling. I’m living in Munich since 10 years, originally from Malaysia.

Having a graphic design background, my creative path lead to photography after I move to Germany. Being new in the country, I was trying to establish some kind of connection or at least to something that I love- art.

I visited many creative events and my path crossed with many creatives and a journalist took me onboard for photography work with her projects.

I’m now also a freelance photographer for some publishing houses in Germany. 5 years full time now and I’m still loving it and inspired everyday making photographs.

I wouldn’t say I have only one specific style but I would describe my direction more of a lifestyle, editorial/documentary, honest and sometimes also experimental with a touch of cinematic feel.

My approach is rather a quiet, yet comfortable(I hope:) and it is important to me having the trust, foster a friendship(not just as a vendor), let it unfold, allowing me to see you and create something that resonates you.

What is your approach to a personal branding shoot?

Authenticity! It should embrace your brand story and show your genuine personality, candid moments and work process.

Secondly, clarity and purpose of your brand story. Once you have your purpose and personality clear, pick the visuals/style that represents you and your business. Create a mood board to conceptualising the photoshoot.

Not only it gives the final inspiration for what you want to capture but also to develop an overall aesthetic.

Every little things has its own message and you want to consider the ones matches you- that makes it unique to you.

It should be infused with you and at the same time communicate professionalism.

Lastly, create images that inspire others.

Either a service or products, you show how your business can add value and allow them to enjoy work and live beautifully.

What type of clients do you like to work with? Any specific industries or sectors you like to work with?

I have a mix of clientele. From craftmakers to ‘formal’ business professionals. I do business headshot,s reportage: about people, garden, crafts and interior, products photography and of course branding shoots.

I welcome everyone who wants to share an idea and collaborate.

What are 1-3 tips you’d give to people preparing for a brand shoot?

So, photography is a visual expression in a whole branding process. Preparation is everything!

  • Have your brand identity and style ready – nail down that color palette and photography style.
  • Moodboard – this is not only important to conceptualise your photoshoot but also a form of communication with the photographer to visualise what you are looking at)
  • Location – for me, it is the most important consideration as it reflects the whole look and final feel
  • Stories to capture – where/ which part to use the image: website, social media, prints. etc.
  • Outfits Props People that you want to include in the shoot.
